If you have a blog associated to your site and registered you feed with Feedburner (now owned by Google) you might have noticed that new posts can make it to the first page of Google’s results within minutes of going live. If you also use the indirect edge method outlined above you can really drive traffic to your Adsense pages and gain customers at the same time.

Calculating the competition

Let’s look at two keyphrases, “Real Estate” and “Real Estate Denver”. Sub prime lending is still a hot topic and it would not be difficult to include references to sub prime lending from within articles about either keyphrase. However, competition for the keywords you target has a direct impact on your abilty to earn.

By using Google’s advanced operators it is possible to calculate how competitive these terms actually are. If you search for “Real Estate” on Google you will see that Google returns 487,000,000 results that it deems relevant to your search. Similarly, “Real Estate Denver“returns 632,000 rsults. This number can be found above the results on the right hand side of the screen.

N.B. The figure that you see for this result may be different, this is because this number is dynamic and I am writing this document in Spain, so we are more than likely viewing results from entirely different data centres.

Although Google reports 487,000,000 pages for Real Estate and 632,000 pages for Real Estate Denver this does not relate to 487,000,000 competing for those terms, only the number of pages that contain those words. Now try these searches:

intitle:”Real Estate” inanchor:”Real Estate”

The number of pages returned from this search is 72,000,000.

intitle:”Real Estate Denver ” inanchor:”Real Estate Denver”

The number of pages returned from this search is 158.

What these 2 searches tell us is that there are 72,000,000 pages that have Real Estate in their title and within the links that point to the page, a sure sign that a decent level of optimisation is in place. This is a seriously competitive term and even with a very powerful blog it’s going to be difficult to rank for it.

Thankfully, we have a fallback term; Real Estate Denver which has only 158 pages that contain the term in both the page title and the links that point to the page. By including a fallback term you increase the chances of gaining rankings and therefore Adsense clicking traffic.

Spider Spider

Where your page eventually ranks within the search engines comes down to the power, trust, reputation and link profile of site that hosts your articles. Sites like HubPages already have this by the bucket load, you may have noticed how quickly your pages rank and may get the occasional surprise at how well they rank. Google’s ranking algorithm takes many things into account in deciding relevancy. This opens up another jar of worms that is SEO, I have written a few hubs about SEO, and will be writing others, so rather than side track this hub I suggest you read those if you want information about SEO.

In essence search engines crawl your pages and download them to their servers. Spiders or crawlers are not responsible for ranking pages, rather pages are analysed by the search engines once they are downloaded. However, Adsense creates another layer of complexity by using a second spider to evaluate the contextual relevancy of your pages in order to deliver suitable ads.

In my opinion, this is why most Adsense publishers can’t get beyond earning a few dollars per month. Before we get into this section you should download and install the Google Adsense Preview tool if you have not already done so. Instructions how to install/uninstall the tool can be found at:

Once the tool is installed you will be able to see which contextual ads would be delivered to any page whether they publish Adsense ads or not.

N.B. When you try this tool for the first time on pages that have not been set up for Adsense the ads may not seem relevant. If this happens return to the page an hour or so later, by that time the Adsense bot should have visited and the correct ads displayed. (Running the Google Adsense Preview tool on a page will send out the Adsense bot to check the page)

So what can we learn by using this tool? Well from a straight forward SEO perspective its great way to check if our “On Page” optimisation is on target. Just run the tool on your pages and see if the ads served up are relevant, if not you might want to tweak your content. Also, check your competitor’s pages and the top ranking pages for the terms you are chasing to make sure that you got it right.

The Adsense algo places a heavy reliance on ‘on page’ factors to serve up relevant ads and each page is looked at in isolation. Internal navigation and back links play a reduced role in calculating which ads are served up. This is contrary to their main algo which drives rankings primarily based on links. This allows you to isolate and effectively test the efficacy of your on page optimisation against competing WebPages.

Semantics

Some of you may have heard about LSI or Latent Semantic Indexing. The truth is, unless you are a dyed in the wool SEO there is no need to understand the technology behind it. You do need to know how to use semantics and how to find terms that are semantically related to those that you are targeting.

If someone was to say to you ‘Java’, would they be talking about coffee, a scripting language or the island? If Java was used along with coffee, script or Jakarta then we would have a better idea what they were talking about.

Search engines work in a similar way in that certain words add contextual meaning to other words and in turn an entire document or article. One of our tasks is to make each page as self descriptive as possible (a task common to SEO and Adsense publishing) thus ensuring that a page is categorised properly, ranks better and displays the most relevant ads.

Working With Googles Semantic Operator

Search Google for wood, you will see that 277,000,000 pages are returned. Now try this search:

~wood -wood

If you are unfamiliar with Google’s semantic search what you have done is:

* Ask Google to return pages that are relevant for wood
* Remove any page from the result that make use of the word wood

Now look at the results and pay particular notice to the words in bold. What you are looking at are the words that Google deems to be semantically related to wood. Now amend your search by misusing out the words in bold as they occur within the search results. So my next search would be:

~wood -wood -cedar

And then:

~wood -wood -cedar -furniture

Eventually you should end up with a search query that looks like this:

~wood -wood -cedar -furniture -wooden -woods -woodworking -lumber -hardwood

Now repeat the process with the first new word that was discovered i.e. cedar: ~cedar -cedar -wood

Continue the process for each word discovered from the original search>

~furniture -furniture -chair -chairs -desks -sofas

~wooden -wooden -wood -toy –carved ~woods -woods -wood -golf -clubs -trees -wood's

~woodworking -woodworking -woodcraft -furniture -do -it -yourself -woodwork -wood –working ~lumber -lumber -wood -timber -logging

~hardwood -hardwood -tile -wood -flooring -timber -laminate

What you now have is a list of words semantically related to Wood. These are the words that Google wants to see on your pages to show that they are authoritative documents. If you want to research how LSI works in depth I suggest you start by researching Term Document Matrix, just type it into Google... Good luck!

At the end of the process you should have a word list similar to the one below.

Wood, cedar, furniture, wooden, woods, woodworking , lumber, hardwood, chair, chairs, desks, sofas, toy, carved, golf clubs, trees, wood's, woodcraft , do it yourself, woodwork, wood working, timber, logging, tile, wood and laminate.

So in the unlikely event I have to write a document that I want to rank for wood I have a dip-in word list I can use to up the relevance of the piece and ensure the most relevant ads are served to my pages. However, its not that often I target single word terms unless they are brand names. To extend the semantic search to include multiple word terms, for example Real Estate, use the following syntax:

~"Real" + ~"Estate" -Real –Estate

And repeat the process as outlined above.

Avoid Getting Banned from Google Adsense

How to Avoid Being Banned From AdSense
If you trawl through the AdSense message board you can’t help but come across tales of woe from AdSense publishers that have had their account banned by Google.
Below is a list of ways people have been banned from AdSense and information on how to avoid it happening to you.

Don’t click on your own ads
The obvious one but still people do it. Google has the IP address of the computer/s that you’ve used to create and check your AdSense account. If it sees that this IP address clicks one of your ads you’re in trouble.

Don’t do it. It’s theft not from Google but from the AdWords advertisers.
If you want to go to a site advertised by one of your ads don’t click on it look at the URL of the advertising site at the bottom of the ad and type it into your browser.
If you click on one accidentally (which does happen) you’re probably be ok but it’s worth dropping a quick email to Google with an explanation and apology

Don’t log in to AdSense from a shared computer.
As I said above Google keeps a record of every machine IP address used to look at your account. If you check your stats on a machine then someone else clicks on your ads from the same machine Google sees this as click fraud. Worth bearing in mind when thinking of checking your stats from somewhere like an Internet Café.

Don’t log in to AdSense from work.
Apart from getting in trouble with the company that employs you there’s also a further real risk. Most companies use a proxy server to access the Internet. A proxy server with ONE IP ADDRESS. Therefore you checking your ads from work means this proxy IP address being recorded by Google as one that you use. Problem is if there are 1000 people in your company it is the same IP address for them too. Google can’t differentiate between you and the other 999 employees in your company. If one of these 999 clicks on one of your ads it’s ban time.

Don’t get into a ‘I’ll click your ads if you click mine’ agreement with another Webmaster.
As above Google will have your IP address and that of every AdSense publisher. If they see these IP addresses consistently clicking on each other ads it’s goodbye for both of you.

Don’t tell friends and family.
Telling friends and family about your money making websites can lead to problems. Even if you tell them not to click on your ads there’s always the chance that Auntie Maud will think it’s a good idea to make some extra money for her favourite nephew. 100 clicks later from the same visitor and your account is screaming ‘Click Fraud’.

Check your account at least once a day. If you see a massive spike coupled with a massive increase in Page CTR investigate using your visitor stats website. If you see it’s all come from the same IP address you could have been the victim of a malicious attack – inform Google via email and offer them access to your logs.

Make sure your articles are original and written by you. Now apply for Adsense Account by going to http://adsense.com. Google will review your site and it will only take 3 to 5 days to approve a good Blog created through Blogger.com

After Google has approved your account, you can now start posting ads in your Blogger.com Blog. Just navigate inside your admin page. You can add adsense ads by going to Page Elements option of Blogger.com

Advertising and Promotion.
Is is easy to promote and advertise the thing you already know. I hate stupid questions like “How do I promote my soccer blog?”, “Where do I promote my SEO forum?”, “How do I increase the traffic to my RPG Blog”?. Believe me but people who are asking these stupid questions don’t know anything about what they are doing. That’s why I suggest you to select a topic of your interest because if you know anything about the topic, the promotion part is not going to be a problem. If you are fond of playing soccer and/or is you are a soccer fanatic, of course you know the majority of soccer sites. Then why are you asking where to advertise your soccer blog? It’s because you know nothing about soccer. The only reason why you created a blog about soccer is because you just heard from someone that soccer niche is paying good. And that’s the stupidity starts.

Too much of explanation. Now we go to real business. Very simple. If you have a Blog related to mobile phones, should you waste your time promoting your blog to gaming forums? Advertise your blog to related sites. When we say related sites, those are sites with the same topic with your Blog. Join in mobile phone forums and post with your signature. Search for blogs related to mobile phones and post comments with your link. If you know people who would like to talk about mobile phones, let them know about your blog. Simple as that. Start with the basic before jumping into nowhere. And if you have time daily, follow this simple but very effective advertising guide.

How to Avoid Failure
The main reason why people fail to meet their goals is simple. They fail because they don’t have patience and perseverance. Earning through a blog as I said takes time. But remember, the moment your site got a regular visitors and catches the interests of your target audience, I can assure you that success is guaranteed. Just stick to what you have started and work hard in promotion. If you are doing hard and not getting the result after 6 months then there is something wrong on what you are doing.

Don’t get influenced by high paying keywords and niches you know nothing about. I have a friend who is very ambitious but until now, he didn’t have anything. Why, because he change niche every quarter. Why he changed niche every quarter? Because he know nothing about those niches. Greed is inside him and its destroying his concentration. Concentrate in your own niche. if you feel you want to shift or change niche, make sure you are well equipped with promotional knowledge.

Well, the above message is too long already and I hope you can start your blog easily. Always remember to join webmasters forums to learn more about advertising and promotion. My views for all those who are starting with adsense:

1. The most important part is to create a website / Blog of your interest topic.

2. Avoid building general website and try on niche subject which you are comfortable in. It can be any topics from Music , Cars, Travel , Finance, business, internet, games etc

3. Try to have your content original and not just anything published on other sites already.

4. Build your site SEO friendly and user friendly.

5. Do not stuff too much of ads on the webpages. This will drive away your visitors. Make strategic placements of ads such that they look as a part of content. This will let users have what they are looking for and also increase your click rates.

6. Link Building: More the no of links pointing towards your website the more will be ranking higher on Search engines and more will be your PR.

7. Do not dream of having Five figure income ( As read in many many ebooks published ) from the very start itself. It will take its time. The more the traffic, and the click rates the more income you will earn.

8. Organic traffic is as much important as your paid traffic. Imagine paying $0.20-$0.30 per click on paid traffic and getting $0.05 - $0.10 in return!!! Choose your adwords or any other arbitrage wisely after doing proper research.

9. Do check out the latest developments by being part of various webmasters/ adsense committees and communicating with other members.

10. Stay away from posting ads against TOS of adsense , a small term, gain can make you regret by getting banned from adsense for lifetime.
Dont worry as you will get experienced with adsense you will get increase in income.

I have two years of experience in adsense and gained some knowedge on adsense. I would like to write tips for beginners who are new to the adsense. There is many experts in the forum, please share your thoughts here if I am missing anything. I want to start with very beginning of the adsense with FAQs.

What is adsense?

Adsense is CPC(Cost - Per - Click) program introduced by google in 2003. If you have a website then you will be allowed to register
to the adsense program and install the script in your website. Then it will show the ads related to your website. Adsense has large network of advertisers who are paying money to google for the ads showing on their websites. For example, you have website related to
Health Care, then adsense algorithm will show most related to your website's theme. The criteria is measured based on the many aspects like keywords,etc. I will write that in future posts.

What is Cost - Per - Click(CPC)?

When reader clicks on any of the ads in your website, advertiser pays some money to google. Then google pays portion of that money to you. But, google doesn't reveal how much is that your share. It is upto google to decide the payout.

How to register?

Before registering to adsense, you must have a blog or website with atleast six months old. (From the latest adsense TOS). Then visit the adsense website here and register with your details. It is upto google to decide whether your website matches their policies. It takes probably two working days.

What is Invalid Clicks or Click Bomb?

It is one of the hardest part in the CPC world. When there is good thnigs, always bad people out there. Few publishers tend to click their own ads for making more money. Google treats this very strictly, they have very nice algorithm to find out the click frauds. They will take life time ban if they find the click frauds.
